Center for Basra and Arab Gulf Studies at University of Basra

 organized a scientific workshop on oil pollution in Basra Governorate, in which Dr. Walid Hamid al-Moussawi, the General Director of Environment Directorate of the Southern Region, lectured, and was presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Qais Nasser. The workshop included several axes, including: sources of oil pollution, types of pollutants, and oil spills, and how to protect and treat the city. They ended it with conclusions and recommendations, highlighted by the need to provide measuring and monitoring devices for pollutants, and the need to develop refineries, and obligate oil companies operating in Iraq to preserve the environment, and establish centers for remote sensing and geographic information systems, as well as continuity Communication between the university and the Environment Directorate
